What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery ?

Breast augmentation which goes by names like breast enhancement, boob job, breast implant, etc. is a process that helps to correct the issue of having smaller breasts due to any reason and achieve larger and proportionate breasts through the help of cosmetic surgery.

First, let's get to know the reasons why a woman might need breast augmentation surgery. Here are the reasons stated by Dr Santosh Bhatia of Vanity Cosmetic Clinic in Mumbai:

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Women suffer a loss in the size of the breasts due to various changes that take place in the body during pregnancy. Even after the child is born, breastfeeding can result in breasts becoming droopy and losing their shape.
  • Ageing: Sagging breasts and lack of firmness are some of the changes that accompany age. This can bring down the morale of the woman whose youthful appearance is lost.
  • Heredity: Heredity also plays a major role in determining the size of the breasts.
  • Hypomastia: In general, one might be unhappy with the size of the breasts as they may suffer from hypomastia which results in underdeveloped and smaller breasts.
  • Asymmetrical breasts: Sometimes the size of the breasts varies as one can be bigger than the other. This affects the overall appearance. Breast augmentation can ensure proportionate and symmetrical breasts.
  • Improving aesthetic appearance: Also, breast augmentation can be done in order to beautify the body even more to improve the overall aesthetic appearance.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Breast Augmentation Surgery ?

Dr Santosh Bhatia has listed down certain conditions that make a woman an ideal candidate for Breast Enlargement Surgery. If you fit into the criteria, then you are definitely an ideal candidate for a breast augmentation surgery:

  • An overall healthy woman.
  • A non-smoker (or ready to give up smoking for a period prescribed by Dr Bhatia).
  • The woman is not pregnant or currently breastfeeding.
  • The woman’s breasts have fully developed.
  • The woman is not happy with the appearance or size or shape of your breasts.

Please note that getting a breast enlargement done is not a good idea if you are succumbing to peer or societal pressure. Undergoing this procedure should be a well-thought decision that you make for yourself.

What Are The Different Types Of Breast Augmentation Surgeries ?

Breast augmentation is generally done either through the use of implants or through fat grafting.

In the case of implants, they are further divided into silicone implants and saline implants.

  1. Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are commonly used in breast augmentation surgeries all over the world. The gel used in these implants is cohesive which makes them safe and matches the feel of natural breast tissues. These implants are further divided into round and anatomical (tear-drop) shapes and are available in varied sizes.
  2. Saline Implants: Saline implants contain sterile saltwater. They can be either pre-filled or filled after inserting them into the breasts.
  • In the case of fat grafting, fat extracted from one’s own body through liposuction is used to inject into the breasts. As the fat used belongs to the patient’s body, it is absolutely safe and easily accepted by the body. However in breast augmentation through fat grafting, the increase in size is not as much as implants.

The type of surgery or implants that are suitable for the patient is decided during the consultation.

What To Expect At The Consultation With Dr Santosh Bhatia?

Generally, when a patient comes to the office for a breast augmentation, Dr Santosh Bhatia guides them through the entire process. The patient’s breasts are examined, their desirable size is discussed and their expectations from the surgery is taken into account.

Dr Santosh Bhatia gives utmost importance to the one-on-one consultation so as to analyse every aspect and issue to deliver the best results.

What To Expect Before The Process Of Breast Augmentation?

Before the process and after the consultation, the type of surgery is decided upon. In the case of augmentation through implants, the breast implants that are a perfect fit for the overall body are decided upon. Dr Santosh Bhatia will need to know the entirety of the medical history in order to carry out the process smoothly and without any complications. The doctor will also ask you to undergo a few blood tests in order to check for any impending issues.

Also, a mammogram might be advised by him so as to determine the current condition and health of the breast

How Is The Process Performed At Vanity Cosmetic Clinic?

The process is performed on an outpatient basis. That is, one does not need to stay overnight at the hospital.

Breast augmentation is generally performed under general anaesthesia and takes about an hour.

1)In Case Of Breast Augmentation Through Implants:

The next step after administering general anaesthesia is to make an incision. The position of the incision will be discussed by Dr Santosh Bhatia with you during the consultation. The three places where an incision can be made for a breast augmentation procedure are – the areolar curve (beneath the nipples), the inframammary fold (the area beneath the fold of the breasts) and the axillary area (the armpits).

The position of the incision determines the visible scarring and the pocket size of the implants.

Once the incision is made, the implants will be placed directly under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue.

The incision, the type of breast implant and the position of the implant will be unique to each patient. Since every patient has different needs and expects different results from the surgery.

Once the placement is done, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures, skin adhesive and surgical tape.

In the case of saline implants, the incisions can be very small as these implants can be filled after their insertion into the breasts.

After the placement of the implants, the incisions are closed with stitches.

2)In Case Of Breast Augmentation Through Fat Grafting:

In this process, fat is extracted through a liposuction cannula from flanks, abdomen, thighs or wherever there seems to be excessive fat. The fat is then processed in a certain manner and then injected into the breast according to the need. This process gives natural-looking results.

What Is The Recovery Process Of Breast Augmentation?

The recovery after breast augmentation, in both the cases of implants and fat grafting, is pretty much the same. The patient is generally monitored for a few hours after the surgery at the clinic itself to keep a check on the vitals. After leaving, the patient has to wear a sports bra for at least three days so as to provide support and quicken the healing process.

Apart from this, it takes about three days for the pain and soreness to completely go away. This is common after surgery and the doctor might prescribe certain medications to alleviate the pain. Vigorous exercise must be avoided immediately after the surgery as it might hamper the healing process.

The patient must visit the doctor after 3 days in order to remove the dressing, and after 10 days to remove the stitches.

Follow-ups must be taken with Dr Santosh Bhatia after 1 month, 3 months and 6 months in order to analyse the result and recovery.

What Are The Risks Associated With Breast Augmentation Surgery?

The risks that are associated with breast augmentation are very rare. Some of these include:

1) Bleeding

2) Persistent pain and swelling

3) Temporary numbness around the areola

4) Chances of infection

5) Scarring

6) Rupturing or leakage of implants

7) Undesirable results

Although these risks are very rare, utmost care must be taken at all times and even during the recovery process to stop these risks from turning into a reality.

If you are wondering whether or not you are an ideal candidate for Breast augmentation, we invite you for a consultation with Dr Santosh Bhatia at Vanity Cosmetic Clinic in Mumbai where he will provide you with his expert guidance and dispel all your doubts!
